Officer of the Deck – HS

We left port at approximately 9:25 AM.

Helmsman – NM

On our way out through the channel from the marina to the bay we saw a pod of dolphins.  It was really amazing to see this group traveling together in the wild.

After traveling for a couple of hours we stopped, dropped anchor and went for a swim.  It was fun until we realized the rope ladder was next to impossible to climb up.  We tried all sorts of tricks to try and get back in the boat but it finally just took a lot of strength and someone holding the bottom of the ladder.

After lunch we started on our way again.

The Officer of the Deck for the afternoon was JW.

The Helmsman, DD.

Shortly after setting sail we discovered a sailboat does not move very fast without wind.  The wind just died.  We did what we could to get moving but had little luck so we stored the sails and started the engine.

As we motored along we could see in the distance two tall ships approaching.  It turned out to be a Schooner and a Square Rigger.  We decided we didn’t want to embarrass ourselves in front of these two ships so we raised the sails (and thankfully the wind had picked up) and we sailed past these two beautiful ships from the past.

We sailed past the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and saw two aircraft carriers and a cruiser docked.

Unfortunately, shortly after this the wind died again.  We ended up motoring the rest of the way into port.

We spent the night in Portsmouth, Virginia.

We decided to take a break from the heat (the temperature was well over 90 degrees) and so after the scouts went for a swim in the pool we went out for dinner.  The air conditioning and food were wonderful.  The restaurant had huge TV screens to watch during our meal and there was a small video arcade where the scouts had a great time.

Storms were predicted for the next day.
