Troop 374 Potluck Picnic

In 2003 and 2004 the troop enjoyed a picnic at a place that we refer to as "Pat's Refuge Area."  Unfortunately, last year seemed to have been missed, but this year it was back on the schedule.

This was especially designed to be a relaxing day where all the parents, scouts and other family members could just hang out and get to know each other better.  About 80 persons were able to be there.

It started under a light drizzle at about 3 PM.  Some decided to fish while others opened their lawn chairs under the main dining fly and just enjoyed each other's fellowship.

Yet others headed to the southern acres for a game of softball.  By 3:30 the skies cleared.

No one cared which side scored the most runs.  The important thing was they all had fun.

Everyone returned to the main picnic area for a game of water balloon toss.

As the grills were warming up, the pond kept the scouts entertained.

The potluck dinner was served around 5:30.  There were jellos, salads, fruit trays, vegetable trays, several bean dishes, deviled eggs, hot dogs, burgers, chips, pies, cookies, brownies, and ..... (it is a very long list).

Later on we popped open a few watermelons.

After lighting the Tiki Torches, Lori Wilson lit the evening campfire.  Using our totally natural (and very simple) techniques, it took two minutes to go from a match to a roaring campfire.

Scoutmaster Byam opened up with a welcome and some profound thoughts and metaphors of our campfire.

Each patrol performed at least one song or skit.  Everyone laughed and enjoyed each other's company throughout the evening.  Mr. Byam shared with us the legend of how mosquitoes were born.  As the campfire burned on, Eagle Scout Andrew Brunton prepared our all-time favorite delicacy: Smockos.

There was one major disappointing aspect of this day, which is that the time went by so fast.  One glance at the wristwatch and we realized that midnight was closing in fast.  Yes, this huge campfire and the fellowship could have easily lasted all night.  But since many of us needed to be out & about on Sunday morning, the campfire needed closure.  One sure thing is that the memories and friendships will last forever.

Our heartfelt thanks to Lori Wilson and her committee for organizing this event.
