Camp Napowan
Day 1 - Sunday July 8, 2007
The scouts met at 7:30 AM @ Sandburg to check in and load the gear. We left just after 8 AM, just about on time. Because we arrived at a Wisconsin rest stop way ahead of schedule for our brown bag luncheon, we did not hurry on to camp.
Check-in time was at 1:30. We arrived by 12:30, so the scouts waited patiently.
Shortly after 1:30 our camp host (nicknamed Slippers) took us to the mess tent to get checked in. Since the nurse was checking in a number of other troops when we arrived, we waited another hour. The temperature during this wait climbed into the 90s.
After our medicals were deemed to be in order we headed down to the swimming lake for our swim test. We waited about a half hour to get tested by the lifeguards.
After completing the swim tests, we headed to the other lake for a brief boating orientation. While we were waiting for that, Slippers told us that some scouts prefer to enjoy a nice relaxing week and perhaps end up with a couple of merit badges, while other scouts opt to kick it in high gear and earn as many as a dozen merit badges during the week.
After 4 PM we headed to the far eastern edge of the campgrounds to get our first glimpse of our home for the week. Troop 374 was blessed that ours was the most beautiful and secluded site in Camp Napowan.
After setting up the tents the scouts headed on to their first meal and evening event at Camp Napowan. Since the last meal the scouts had was at 11 AM, everyone was certainly hungry.
