Mel's November 2004
This weekend was perfect. (almost) The weather, the food, the scenery, no one got hurt.
We headed for Mel's Friday evening. He had a roaring campfire waiting for us. We took a midnight hike down into the valley.
Southwest Wisconsin is very beautiful country. We posted the colors after breakfast, then headed out for a hike. We hoped for clearly marked trails. We encountered heavy thorn bushes as tall as most of our scouts. We did stray off the path to climb a tall bluff, and ended up in a farmer's field. He happened to be driving by on his tractor and was able to point us back to the trail around Blackhawk Lake.
After a late lunch of hot dogs and macaroni & cheese, Mr. King gave several scouts a lesson on safe handling and cleaning of firearms. We then headed down into the valley to fire off some rounds.
After dinner, we started our second annual flag disposal ceremony. Over a year earlier, one of our Eagle Candidates decided to help make the community aware of the proper disposal methods for flags (See the link under our Eagle Scouts).
Sunday Morning it was chilly, but otherwise a perfect day. Some of the scouts stayed near camp to toss the football around and fire off a few rounds from the shotgun. Others went back down into the valley to finish off the Rifle Merit Badge.
On the way back we stopped for lunch.
