Dear Eagle Candidates!

If you haven’t done so already, start thinking about whom you'd like to request Letters of Reference (LOR) from. As an Eagle Scout Candidate, you’ll need a total of 5 LORs from individuals who know you well enough to write about your Character.

LIST:   The breakdown of respondents is as follows:

  1. Your parents/guardian
  2. Someone who can attest to your reverence--faith in God:
  3. A current or former teacher, coach, tutor, coach. This person can be from school, private lessons, clubs etc.
  4. 2 from other sources like neighbors, parents within the troop that are not ASM, SM, Committee members.  One of these could be from an employer.

Only forward me your list of names, addresses and phone numbers if asked.

PROCESS: Steps and tips to follow:

1.      Ask them politely and tell them what your goal is—to become an Eagle Scout.

2.      If they agree, give them

o        a copy of the Eagle Scout Character Reference Form

o        a stamped envelope addressed to our Scout Master.  Please write the name of the sender, address, and scout's initials in the upper left corner of the outside of the envelope as shown in this example:.

PN LOR (your initials instead of Pat Neal's)

Ben Franklin (the name, address, etc. of the author of your LOR)

123 Easy St.

Wheaton, IL 60187

3.      Ask them to send the LOR within 2 weeks.

4.   Follow-up with SM in 3 weeks to see if he’s received the LOR’s. If he hasn’t, place a polite follow-up call with the individual who has yet to respond.

Happy Trails!
