Greene Valley 2004

In order to enjoy the ambiance and avoid light & air pollution that exists in the Chicago area, plus avoid camping near heavily traveled highways, rail roads and air traffic flight paths, most Troop 374 campouts are over 100 miles away from Wheaton.  This time we stayed in our own DuPage County to enjoy a reserve area that few Troop 374 Scouts had ever been to before.  Situated around a landfill that has long since closed is a maze of trails, a campground and nature preserve.

Our scoutmaster knew that rain had been forecasted.  Our first order of business was to set up the dining fly.  As soon as the dining fly had been set up we decided to use it for lunch.  A brief rain had already started.  We then embarked on about two hours of brisk hiking (5 miles?) along the nature trails at Greene Valley.

When we returned, some of the scouts started splitting wood for the evening campfire.  Mr. King helped other learn some knots that he had learned over the years.

One of our scouts is also a very good chef.  He decided to treat our troop to a meal that we had never had before.  Pizza!

There is no greater compliment to a chef than to see that every crumb had been devoured.

As soon as dinner over, our master chef decided to create several dump cakes.

We learned how to feel far away while being close to home.
