Glen
is standing on Swift Rd. between St. Charles & North Ave. He is pointing westward down
The Great Western Trail. At
one point the path crosses a river. If a jogger or biker were to
accidentally stray from the path at that point, they would fall at least 20'
into the rocky river below, surely suffering injury or death. Glen decided
to build a fence along that dangerous stretch of the path.
In the process, he lined up volunteers from many walks of life. Also, nearly every Troop 374 scout came out to work on this project.
Years Later: The project site revisited in 2006:
The fence still stands (with some modifications). The original rails have been replaced with chains, but the most difficult component of the project (the posts that hold the main barriers in place) remain and will obviously continue to protect those using the path for decades to come.
