Friday Evening
The troop left for the Three Fires Council Ranch at 4 PM on Friday, October 7, 2005. Being a three day weekend, some scouts could not attend due to family travels. Others were taking the A.C.T. exam at the high school. Still others were heavily involved with homecoming festivities. The scouts who were able to attend had a blast.
We stopped for a fast food dinner in Rochelle and arrived at the TFC ranch by 6 PM. Mr. Brunton and Mr. Byam had left earlier in the day to set up our campsite as much as possible. When we arrived, they were cooking a dinner (Picture 1) of their own. We took our traditional "First Photo" (Picture 2) at the campsite. As we enjoyed first hot chocolate and smores, Mr. Brunton experimented (Pictures 3 & 4) with creative ways of starting a campfire. (Troop 374 volunteered to lead the fire for the whole camp Saturday night.) During this experiment, Mr. Brunton ignites lint from the clothes dryer using electric current. It works! He had several other backup plans as well, including using the Tiki torches.
Mr. Pearson set up his 24 hour Nuke'em KP station. Everything appears to be clean after being scrubbed in the pre-rinse tub at the left. A person with even an introductory level biology class knows that bacteria survives that type of pre-wash. That is why the smaller container has the very hot water fortified with antibacterial dish soap. GERMS DIE in that smaller container. The other two tubs are for rinse. One is slightly chlorinated, which is an insurance policy, juuust in case a very stubborn germ somehow survives the hot wash. The second is a regular clean water rinse.
