Cobia

Troop 374 heads to the submarine every January.  This year we went to the Cobia.  Our annual sub trip lasts 28 hours, including seven hours for driving, three hours for meals, time for partying and spending the night on the sub.  We usually also spend a few hours sledding at a local park.

It dipped to 10 below zero that night.

After the pizza we boarded the sub.  During the evening, the Cobia Museum gave the scouts some training and history of submarine life.  The scouts played cards and then hit the bunks.

First thing Monday morning:  We looked east toward Michigan to see an interesting cloud formation.

First thing in the morning we headed over to McDonalds for breakfast.

We headed back to the museum located next to the Cobia.  They had more to see than we had time for.  We enjoyed what we could.

The paparazzi crossed the river and took a couple photos of the troop on a windy zero degree day standing on the Cobia.

Between the time the photos were taken on the sub and the photos shown below, we were at a sledding hill.  A couple of complications kept the paparazzi from his duties at the sledding hill.  In the process of performing the functions of his part-time job (serving hot chocolate), it was discovered that the five gallon plastic jug of water meant for use to make hot chocolate was a frozen block of ice.  The minivan heater helped to thaw out that water, but it took a while.  Then we discovered that propane does not burn very well at temperatures below zero.  The propane tank needed to be held upside down so liquid propane could flow into the gas pipe.  During this time, no photos were taken.  The scouts and parents very much enjoyed sledding and several gallons of hot chocolate!

After that, we headed down the road to a steak restaurant.
